We probably have as much experience working wedding receptions as any group in the Southeast. We have worked events where the bridesmaid's dresses cost $70,000.00 and we have played receptions where all the guests brought a covered dish to the event. Our experience has shown that it doesn't matter how much money you spend, where it is, or how many people attend. What makes a reception a success is the amount of love and affection that exists among the guests for the new husband and wife and that is the main key. That is more important than the music, the food, the cake, and the setting.
Nevertheless, if you want live music that can resonate with every guest, regardless of age or background, the League of Decency is an enlightened choice. We have many classic selections from the Great American Songbook, featuring music associated with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae, Tony Bennett, Nat "King" Cole, Billie Holiday, Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, The Gershwin Brothers, and more. We typically focus on these and tunes from Count Basie and Duke Ellington early in the reception. Even after we shift into more energetic Soul and Motown tunes we continue to include ballads from the Swing Era, which usually work well for any couples who prefer a slow dance.
After starting out mellow we usually shift into Motown and Soul numbers by the Temptations, Otis Redding, Mary Wells, Ray Charles, The Marvelettes, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, The Four Tops, Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and The Supremes. Depending on the preferences of the crowd on the dance floor we generally end up playing high energy Funk from groups like Fly and The Family Stone, The Commadores, Brick, Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang, and James Brown. At this point it is strictly up to the dancers as to how far out or low down you want to go.
Our repertoire includes an increasing number of Mambos, Rumbas, Cha Chas, Waltzes, Tangos and Waltzes for those who like a variety of dance styles.
If there is a special favorite we need to learn for a first dance or other number, we are happy to make that happen if given a minimum thirty days notice.
